Salamat Po Kai Foundation

 •  36

Years ago I was just like any blessed student who depends on his/her scholarship to finish college. Every semester I receive stipend from my scholarship. Most were paid for enrollment. What’s left is mine to spend.

I was a scholar of Salamat Po Kai Scholarship. It  is a non-government organization, sponsored by generous Japanese individuals and organizations, which aims to help Filipino students finish their studies. The Tagalog phrase “Salamat Po” means “Thank You” while, the Japanese word ‘Kai’ means ‘foundation’.

Scholars were chosen among student applicants who passed the weighted average grade requirement. As gratitude, we scholars give cards/letters to our sponsor on important occasions such as Christmas, Birthdays and Easter day, and maintain good academic standing.

I have known the scholarship from a good friend – Janus Cabazares, whose been an SPK scholar since highschool. Together with another good friend – Milrose Salazar, we applied, and we were fortunate to receive the scholarship grant. All scholars have their own sponsor either an individual or an organization/school. My sponsor was Mrs. Ruiko Kawai, a married Japanese mother whose age at the moment is around 60 years old. I haven’t thought before that there are Japanese individuals at her age who are generously helping Filipinos.

It’s easy to boast the scholarship(s) that we receive especially when it was given out of academic performance, hardwork and perseverance. However, as I recall my college years, I feel guilty knowing that there were times that I didn’t perform at my best, and there were moments that I forgot to be grateful and even to say thank you. And even up to this very moment, I feel the heavy load for not communicating with my sponsor anymore, for not sending pictures of my graduation, and even giving a simple Thank You card as a sign of gratitude.

Salamat Po Kai Scholarship bridged me to my sponsor. Mrs. Ruiko Kawai was indeed God’s blessing to me. I may not have expressed well my thanksgiving for all the financial support she has given me but I’ll forever be grateful to SPK and my sponsor.

Maraming Salamat Po Mrs. Ruiko Kawai! Thank you Salamat Po Kai!

Hello…its nice to know that there are many scholars of Salamat po kai.. I’m also the first beneficiaries of Salamat po kai in Ateneo de Naga (1993-1997). Thanks to my benefactor Ms. Hidaka Kanako who is 3 years Older than me, from Kyoto and taking up Medical Technician in Kyoto University…we lost contact when I entered PMA in 1997…Everything I achieved was because of her and the organization…with the nature of my training and work, I wasn’t able to say THANK YOU, since i don’t have her address or even the address of the organization…with this, I hope I could say THANK YOU to ALL BENEFACTORS and to the organization…I hope that I can find the missing link of the organization.. I believe also that it’s time to share what we have…not to only to our benefactors but to those filipino who can’t afford to go to school… Thank You Guys and God Bless to all of you.. vicbrazal@yahoo.com

hi…just like you,i am a recipient of the scholarship when i was in college, that was 13 years ago. Without it its really impossible for me to finish college. I am married now with two kids, employed in one of the renowned university here in southern mindanao, and on my 2nd year in PhD Business Management. I lost contact with my sponsor and I have been wanting to get in touch with them. I think your the best person who could help me. Can you please give me the address of the salamat po kai office? So that I can write to my sponsor thru them. Please email me at che_0322@yahooo.com. I would gladly appreciate it if you can grant my request the soonest possible time. Thank you so much…and God bless all Japanese who always extended their helping hand to Filipinos especially the less fortunate.

Nice to hear your comments and stories my fellow SPK scholars. Honestly, I have no more communication to the foundation. As much as I want to contact my sponsor, I don’t think the foundation would allow us. Will they?

If I’ll be able to get in touch I’ll surely post it here and let you know.

    Thanks!

Hi everyone! I’m also an SPK scholar (H group) from high school until college. I feel the same sentiments like what the author have written. I’m currently taking my MA at Miriam College and I have a project to undertake that deals with adopting an organization. I will make a phone call later and ask Fr Nishimoto if I could have SPK as my subject. It will be also a good opportunity for me to ask your questions if I get to visit the office. ^_^

FYI – the general assembly of scholars, which is held every other year, is postponed this year.

Hello Fellow SPK Scholars. I am from Albay, Bicol and was also a fortunate beneficiary of the said foundation. I graduated in 2000. Probably it would be great if we can have a common avenue to discuss things, perhaps a fb page. Just a suggestion..

Nice meeting all of you. 🙂

Is it true that you’ll be shutting down the foundation by 2015? there’s still a lot of kids who need the help. I also benefited from the spk scholarship in my younger years. My Sponsor was Mrs. Keiko Hayashibara I wanted to thank her for the help she gave me even though I lost the scholarship when I went to high school because I fell below the required grade average due to some personal issues. But I am still thankful. So I hope someone who knows my sponsor might be able to read this and pass along my words of gratitude even if it was a long time ago

Hi guys. I’m blessed that i too became one of the beneficiaries of Salamat Po Kai Scholarship. I will not be able to study in Ateneo De Naga High school from 1992 to 1996 if it was not for my benefactor Mr. Tatsuhiko Ikeda. He visited me twice during my school years but we never got to contact again since then. I just want to say thank you to him and his family for providing my tuition then. I owe my education to him. May he have been blessed more because of his generosity. Thank You also to Salamat Po Kai.

I am forever grateful to the SPK foundation. I take pride that once a certain Mrs. Sadako Aoki pledged to support my studies in college. When she died, her daughter continued that support I badly needed that time. After graduation, I was not able to get in touch with the foundation…and I really feel guilty about that…I surf the net and happened to find this out…I also received an e-mail from ms odette solis about the update..I really miss those times of get-together…wish there will be another in the coming days…

    こんにちはみんなさん,

I would like to say thank you so much to my sponsors. Hayashi Chitose and Takijii Miyako.
They contributed a really big help in achieving my dreams.I graduated last 2011, and now I’m currently working in a Japanese firm for almost 3 years. Right now I’m having my training here in japan. It will take 10 months and i will be staying here until March next year. I still haven’t got a chance to say thank you personally to them because i don’t have neither their addresses or numbers.
If i will be given a chance to say thank you to them personally during my stay here in Japan, I will really be happy for that. I’d like to say thank you to the foundation, you’ve made a big difference to many lives. Godbless you all. 本当にどうもありがとうございました
